Geelong trained Surfside posted his first win for the Malady stable in the Trotter’s Coaches Maiden Plate (1600m) at Hamilton over the weekend.

Surfside started this time in with a solid fourth at Warrnambool on April 2 before Malady dropped him back to maiden company for his Hamilton assignment.

Malady booked prolific provincial jockey Linda Meech to ride the son of Rock Of Gibraltar for the second occasion in the $15,000 contest after she partnered him at his previous outing.

Malady added blinkers to Surfside’s gear after his first run for the stable, which produced the desired effect as the four-year-old strode straight to the lead from barrier six.

Meech’s rival riders left her to set the tempo, which she slowed to suit herself during the middle stages of the race, leaving plenty in reserve for her mount’s finishing effort.

Surfside found two lengths when Meech asked him for an effort early in the straight before he fought strongly over the final 300 metres to score by 1-1/4 lengths, earning a $9000 winner’s cheque for his connections.

Congratulations to Surfside’s owners – Leigh Booth, Christian Lister, Will McTaggart, Alan Patterson, Greg Pell, Terry Scanlon, Paul Toleman.
