Consistent gelding Pelikaan Straat has provided Geelong trainer Vincent Malady with his first win of the season when he strode to victory in the Sphinx Hotel Handicap (2100m) on the Geelong Synthetic track.

Pelikaan Straat has raced in great heart throughout his long winter preparation, particularly at his last three starts, before his latest success in Rating 58 company.

Talented jockey Jamie Mott produced the perfect ride to get Pelikaan Straat home in the $17,500 event, ensuring the gelding had cover in the blustery conditions throughout the early and middle stages before creeping closer to the leaders rounding the home turn.

Mott eased Pelikaan Straat three-wide into clear running with 400 metres to run before he strode away from his opposition to score a powerful 2-1/2 length win under 59.5kg.

The victory was Pelikaan Straat’s fourth from 35 starts and took his prizemoney to more than $60,000.

Congratulations to Pelikaan Straat’s owners – Mr L J Leahy, Mr R W More, Mrs M C Leahy, Mr P D Leahy, Mr G I Bevan on their latest success.
