Talented galloper Easy Jay posted the most impressive win of his career when he nearly broke Warrnambool’s 1200-metre course record despite being eased down in the closing stages.
The fast pace set the race up for the five-year-old gelding who charged home from second last with a savvy ride from apprentice Sarah Field in Monday’s RMBL Investments Rising Star BM58 Hcp.
“The race worked out well for him,” said Sarah said.
“They went really quick which suited him and I was told to jump and ride him where was comfortable.”
Back second last and six lengths off the lead, Sarah weaved Easy Jay through a gap on the home turn and had him ready to launch in the straight.
Trainer Vincent Malady said moderate race tempos had worked against Easy Jay in recent runs but he was able weaponise his turn of foot at Warrnambool.
“He’s a horse who needs to relax and he can get too keen and hang if the pace isn’t genuine,” Vincent said.
With a stunning burst over the last 250 metres, Easy Jay ($7.50) quickly made up four lengths and surged clear in the final 100 metres to win by 3-1/4 lengths from Francine ($3.90) and Born To Shine ($5).
He covered the 1200 metres in 1m9.56s but had he been pushed out he may have broken Tigress Joy’s record of 1m9.31s which has stood for 11 years.
“I was quite soft on him late,” said Sarah.
Easy Jay has won three races this year and four in his 19 starts career which has also included four placings.
Racing in the light blue and dark blue diamond silks of Phillipines-based owner Putch Puyat, Easy Jay has earned $82,365 in prizemoney.
