Handy galloper Boyfromwye has never been an easy horse to handle, which is why every win delivers extra satisfaction given his underlying ability.
On Saturday, the five-year-old was back to his best when he scored an easy win at Stawell.
Remarkably, Boyfromwye has had 22 starts, and only seven of those runs have been away from Geelong, where he has won twice.
He also won his maiden Kyneton in May last year and on Saturday appreciated the extra distance of the Paul Summers Electrical 0-58 Hcp (2004m).
“Most of his racing has been around 1700m metres, and he’s been strong at the end of his races, which gave us confidence he could win at Stawell,” Vincent said.
Jarrod Fry rode the heavily backed favourite from $3.40 to $2.70, who was slow to begin and at the winning post was tailed off three lengths last.
He was at least 12 lengths off the lead in the same position mid-raced before he very quickly circled the field three wide from the 800 metres.
After joining the leaders four-wide approaching near the 500 metres, he sustained his long run into the home straight and surged clear in the final 100 metres to win by three lengths from Budjik Boy ($13) and Spanish Snitzel ($21).
“He generally gets back in his races, but he has a very good turn of foot,” Vincent said.
“He needs that touch of luck because of his racing pattern, but he’s an extremely tough horse, and he put them away pretty easily today.”
Owner Peter Russell bred Boyfromwye, who is a son of his former 3-time winner, Barmaid From Wye.
Jarrod Fry has partnered Boyfromwye to all four of his wins and understands the horse well, having ridden him 15 times.
He said he’s a very casual customer who takes plenty of riding, but when you get him going, he really lets go.
