Veteran mare Chelsea Toff has marked the anniversary of her last win with another victory at Echuca.
Exactly a year ago, Chelsea Toff landed Echuca’s BET365 0-58 Hcp (1200m) and she emulated the feat with a powerful finish in Saturday’s Super Clean Linen Service 0-56 Hcp (1200m) at the same track.
Trainer Vincent Malady said the mare had been a spec buy for his Geelong stable foreman Asher Trom-Wright who had done a wonderful job looking after the nine-year-old.
“Most mares are well and truly retired by the time they are nine, but Asher loves the horse, and we don’t over-race her,” Vincent said.
The daughter of Toorak Toff has won four of her 38 starts while nine second placings and a third underline her consistency.
Asher bought Chelsea Toff as a tried horse for $3000 in July 2023 and has proven a cheap buy with her latest Echuca victory taking her earnings to $71,510 with the stable.
Her two Echuca wins (at $26 and $20 respectively) were identically fashioned with her being eased back from wide barriers at the start and making strong last runs.
On Saturday, Chelsea Toff settled 11th of the 14 runners and was blocked behind a wall of horses on the home turn before jockey Teo Nugent eased her out five lengths off the lead in the entering the straight.
Eight-year-old mare Kaniva ($10) hit the front halfway up the straight, but Chelsea Toff was charging and swept past her at the 100 metres and held off Danerich Dan ($5.50) and Miss Himalaya ($31) to score by a length.
