Impending Swan looks to have a promising future as a stayer after she broke through for her maiden win at Donald.
Having just her third race start, the daughter of Impending is a stable favourite and after couple of encouraging recent runs deserved her victory in Tuesday’s Weir’s IGA + Liquor Donald Maiden Plate (1620m).
Ridden by John Allen, Impending Swan ($2.40 fav) had a good trail two wide behind the leaders and improved to third passing the 800m to threaten on the home turn.
Entering the home straight the four-year-old collared the leader Popeye ($31) and kept running strongly to the line to score by 1-1/4 lengths from The Charlatan ($7) and Carolina Rose ($9.50).
Trainer Vincent Malady said Impending Swan was a popular horse in the stable and shapes as though she will get a strong 2000 metres.
“We have built her up slowly and she has improved with every start this campaign,” Vincent said.
In her first race campaign she raced four times and placed twice over 1350m and 1530m, and in three runs this preparation finished fourth over 1200m and a close third over 1412m at Echuca on May 23.
John Allen said Impending Swan got “a little bit warm” behind the barriers but her racing manners suggest she will stay.
“She put her head down and was quite relaxed in the run which gives her every opportunity to run further.”
“She didn’t really quicken, but she held her gallop to the line, I think she will improve.”
